Challenge
The VP of Operations had been on board for fewer than 4 weeks. Within that time period, he made several personnel changes to meet the changing needs of a company transforming their business model to an outsourced manufacturer in China. The challenge at hand for this VP was working with both new and existing director level lieutenants to build a cohesive team that could help the company move forward in a demanding business environment.
Solution
5.12 Solutions led a full-day offsite program with the primary goal of building trust, enhancing communication, and clarifying roles and responsibilities. Using the DiSC Profile, team members learned more about their own style, how that differed from others on their team, and how they could adapt their style to be more effective. Each person walked away with materials that they could refer to in the workplace, including a mini team view showing the profile snapshot of all other team members. DiSC set the tone for people to know each other at a deeper level, enabling them to begin the process of building vulnerability based trust.
After spending half the day on team dynamics and sharing what they needed from each other to be most successful, the team focused on clarifying roles and responsibilities and setting 6 month team goals. Moving forward, the team unanimously agreed to conduct a ½ day offsite every other month, and in fact scheduled the first follow-up session to be combined with the VP of Engineering and his direct reports to develop inter-departmental team cohesion.
Result
The team has started out on the right foot, evidenced by the open dialogue, zero fear of conflict, and willingness to support each other. The VP of Ops recently stated on a conference call that his team members are consistently bringing new and different ideas to the table, and, even when they disagree with each other, show a strong sense of respect and openness.
